Outreach
We believe that science should be accessible to everyone. That is why we are dedicated to reaching out beyond the scientific community and engaging with society. Through our outreach efforts, we translate scientific findings to broader audiences, aiming to inspire curiosity, spark interest, and share the excitement of scientific discovery. By addressing emergent societal challenges, we promote understanding and encourage public engagement in evolutionary biology.
Berlin Science Week 2024
At Berlin Science Week, we had the privilege of presenting our innovative work on genomics and its critical role in biodiversity conservation. We contributed in a session that explored how genetic insights can be leveraged to combat species extinction. Participants were intrigued by the application of museomics in our research. By showcasing successful genomic initiatives, we highlighted our commitment to harnessing genomics to protect our planet's biodiversity. For 10 days, the event came alive with more than 300 vibrant sessions, hosted at two central festival hubs, scattered venues around the city, and accessible online.
SOS Amazon
On October 16, 2024, Dr. Sobral and us hosted the Noke Koî, an indigenous tribe from the Amazon, to raise awareness about deforestation, biodiversity loss, and impacts on their communities. The event included insights into Amazonian tribe history, a musical performance, and discussions on Brazil's recent political landscape. A highlight was the tribe's perspective that "they are the forest, and the forest is them," underscoring the inseparable bond between cultural and biological diversity. This event emphasized the critical role of integrating indigenous perspectives in conservation efforts.
Connecting Science and Society
In the Science News blog of the SMNS, we bridge the gap between complex scientific research and everyday understanding. Here, we translate our latest manuscripts and research findings into clear, accessible language that everyone can understand. Through this platform, we hope to inspire curiosity, foster a deeper appreciation for science, and highlight how our research addresses pressing societal challenges.
Science Meets Art
Our research group values interdisciplinary collaboration and the unique insights that can emerge when science intersects with art. We have had the privilege of working closely with choreographer Léonard Engel on innovative projects that explore the fascinating concepts of mimicry, evolution, and the human body. As scientific consultants, we provided expertise that enriched the artistic process and brought a new dimension to these performances.

Open Doors Day at the SMNS
At the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS), we invite our local community to join us for an immersive experience into the world of natural history and scientific discovery. Explore our Scientific Collections, participate in Hands-On Demonstrations of lab work, gain Evolutionary Insights from our bird collections, and Meet Our Scientists in person.
Open Doors Day offers an enriching experience for families, students, and science enthusiasts of all ages, fostering curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
